As a Product Builder, you’re constantly asked to leverage AI. But how do you ensure the AI you build is not just a cool piece of tech, but a responsible, high-value solution that actually fixes a problem?
The answer is the FAIVR Loop.
The Friction-to-AI Value & Responsibility (FAIVR) Loop is a powerful, question-driven framework designed to cut through the hype. It guides you from identifying a messy user pain point to shipping a valuable, ethical, and successful AI feature.
To illustrate, we’ll track a single, unconventional product through the entire loop: UnitManager Pro, a property management platform for landlords.
Step 1: Pinpoint the Critical Friction (Problem Validation)
AI is expensive. Don’t use it to solve a minor inconvenience. This step is about proving a high-pain, high-frequency manual task exists.
Map the Job & Current State: Ask users about their last task. The landlord for UnitManager Pro describes spending 30 minutes reading and manually decoding every vague maintenance request before assigning a vendor.
Identify the Friction: Where is the time sink? Landlords are frustrated by the time spent interpreting ambiguous tenant text (e.g., “the thingy is busted in the kitchen”).
Define the Target UX Improvement: What’s the magic wand result? “The request should automatically categorize the issue (e.g., ‘Plumbing Leak’) and suggest a severity.”
Friction Identified: Landlords waste significant time manually interpreting and categorizing vague inbound maintenance requests.
Step 2: The AI Feasibility Filter (The “Only AI” Gate)
This is the gatekeeper. If simple code or a rules engine works, use it! Only proceed with advanced AI if you answer YES to the necessary questions.
Does it require Interpretation?YES. Tenant reports are unstructured text (“My tub won’t stop running and I hear a drip-drip”). Standard code can’t interpret intent.
Does it require Creation?NO. We don’t need to write a repair response; we just need to classify the issue (“Plumbing,” “High Severity”).
Does it require Adaptation?YES. The model must learn from new tenant phrasing, regional slang, and evolving repair issues to stay accurate.
Feasibility Conclusion: The need for unstructured Interpretation and Adaptation confirms that Machine Learning (ML) is the appropriate path.
Step 3: Responsible AI & Risk Assessment (The “No-Regrets” Gate)
If you skip this step, you will ship harm. You must identify and mitigate risks before design begins.
Assess Harm & Safety: What is the worst-case scenario? The AI misclassifies a Critical safety issue (e.g., “Gas Smell”) as a Low Priority problem, delaying emergency response.
Assess Bias & Fairness: Which groups might be affected? Tenants who use highly non-standard English or regional jargon may have their requests consistently misclassified, leading to unfair service delays.
Define Mitigation: What is the hard requirement to ship safely?Mitigation Plan: Implement a Confidence Score for the classification. If the AI’s confidence is below 80% (indicating potential misinterpretation), the request is automatically flagged for mandatory manual landlord review.
Step 4: AI Approach Selection & UX Strategy (The “How to Apply”)
The problem type (Step 2) and your mitigation plan (Step 3) dictate the solution and its presentation.

UnitManager Pro Application: Since we need classification (ML) and must keep the landlord accountable for safety (Mitigation), we choose the Invisible/Assistive mode. The ML model runs quietly in the background, pre-tagging and prioritizing the request before it even reaches the landlord’s dashboard, but the landlord remains the final approver.
Step 5: Iterate and Validate (The Loop)
Did you actually fix the friction (Step 1) and stay safe (Step 3)? The metrics tell the story.
Safety & Trust Metric: The User Over-ride Rate. If the landlord is constantly changing the AI’s category suggestion, the model is failing. Success Target: Less than 5% Over-ride Rate.
Friction Reduction Metric:Time-on-Task Reduction. Measure the decrease in the average time between the tenant’s submission and the repair vendor’s assignment. Success Target: A 40% reduction in average assignment time.
Business Metric:ROI. Is the value worth the maintenance cost? Success Metric: An increase in the number of units managed per landlord (scalability) or reduced tenant turnover.
When these metrics are met, the FAIVR Loop is closed. The feature is a success—responsible, valuable, and validated—and you can return to Step 1 for the next point of friction.
